A large and diverse group of procaryotic and eucaryotic organisms that usually have in common the ability to photosynthesise, whereby solar energy is used to synthesize organic molecules from water and carbon dioxide. In oceanic waters they are almost without exception microscopic and are the basis of pelagic food chains.
