Diagnosis
This is a highly diverse genus, showing a wide variety of carapace shapes and ornamentation and probably merits splitting. The vast majority of the species appear to be benthic, benthopelagic or abyssopelagic, and so they are very rare in collections. Lengths range from 1.5 to >7mm. All but one of the species lack frontal organs. The pad on the fifth segment of the first antenna carries 100-300 fine setae, which are sharpely are sharpely angled and appear to form a curtain across the inhalent flow of water.
Remarks
Currently 22 species have been attributed to this genus. Discovery material includes may be a further 12 that await description. Three of these species, Bathyconchoecia darcythompsoni, B. kornickeri, and B. nodosa have been reported from the region, all from depths >2000m and from samples taken on, or very close to the seabed.
