Diagnosis
Carapace of both sexes almost bilaterally symmetrical (C. aff. edentata Habitus 1, C. aff. edentata Habitus 3). Dorsal surface straight, ventral surface curving almost symmetrically both anteriorly and posteriorly. In ventral aspect, the flanks curve smoothly (C. aff. edentata Habitus 2, C. aff. edentata Habitus 4). Sculpturing absent. The right asymmetrical gland opens a third height up posterior margin, left gland opens just below the postero-dorsal corner. A large medial gland occurs at mid-length on ventral margin of right valve.
Female, frontal organ capitulum differentiated by being swollen, spinose and rounded (C. aff. edentata 1). First antenna with a minute dorsal seta, "e" seta only slightly longer than sensory setae. Second antenna endopodite with longest seta ("f") terminally flattened into a sword-shape. The terminal setae of the sixth limb are exceptionally long so that, casually, females can be mistaken for males.
Male, frontal organ with stem similar in length to first antenna, capitulum densely spinose on its ventral basal half (C. aff. edentata 3). First antenna with both "a" and "c" setae being longer than the limb; "b" seta carrying 9-12 widely spaced spines and then 8-10 more closely spaced but weaker spines level with a ridged pad on "d" seta; "e" seta only a little longer than others, armature consists of 19-25 pairs of bumps from which arise vestigial spines (C. aff. edentata 4). Second antenna endopodite, "i" seta with spinules on its base, right-hand hook appendage basally bends through about 120°, distally only slightly curved (C. aff. edentata 5).
Remarks
This description is based on Atlantic material which may not be conspecific with C. edentata sensu stricto.
Distribution
Müller, 1906 described C. edentata from the Southern Ocean; this species is probably the same but until material from the original region can be reexamined Gooday, 1976 considered that the status of the North Atlantic form must remain doubtful. The species described here is a deep mesopelagic species known from 60°N- 11 °N in the North Atlantic. 1, 2, 3 (R.R.S. Discovery Map).
Type specimens
None designated for C. edentata ; status of original material uncertain.
Type locality
Original material described from two localities in the Southern Ocean at 55°27'S 28°58'E and Ocean 16°14'E.
