Diagnosis
Dorsal margin of carapace almost straight, with slight expression of shoulders. Ventral margin curves smoothly into the posterior margin. The strong anterior taper results in maximum height being at three quaners length (C. hystrix Habitus 1, C. hystrix Habitus 3). Right asymmetrical gland quite broad, opening on small prominence just below midpoint of posterior margin. Left asymmetrical gland opening immediately beneath posterior end of hinge.
Female, frontal organ undifferentiated, slightly swollen pointed end carries fine spinules (C. hystrix 1). First antenna segmentation obscure with a minute dorsal seta, the "e" seta is a third the length of the carapace and double the lengths of the sensory setae. Second antenna endopodite "a" and "b" setae sub-equal, bare; terminal setae are sub-equal (C. hystrix 2).
Male, frontal organ capitulum down-turned, bare, broad at base but rapidly tapering becoming parallel-sided distal two-thirds of length; stem similar in length to first antenna (C. hystrix 3). First antenna first two podomeres of similar length; "a" seta is two-thirds the length of the second podomere; "c" seta minute; "e" seta armature 20-21 pairs of small pointed spines. Second antenna protopodite almost half the length of the carapace; on endopodite, "f" seta is slightly longer than the protopodite, is three quaners the length of the "g" seta and three times the other sensory setae.
Remarks
Only known from the Porcupine Seabight region of the Northeastern Atlantic. Possibly endemic to this region, but the lack of sampling from near-bottom environments down continental slopes may be the reason for this species being missed previously. An apparently unique species without obvious affinities with any other known species.
Distribution
Benthopelagic at slope depths of 935-1425m in the Porcupine Seabight region. 1 (R.R.S. Discovery Map).
Type specimens
Holotype, a male dissected, mounted on slides in "Euparal", deposited in the British Museum (Natural History); BM(NH) 1980.132. The female paratype, also on slides, is registered BM(NH) 1980.133.

49°23.6'N 12°47.6'W. Discovery station 10108 haul 8; depth 1410-1425m (15-30m above the sea-bed); date 6th September 1979; gear RMT1 net (0.33µm mesh).
