Conchoecia inflata

Gooday, 1981

Diagnosis
Carapace lateral outline clearly tapering anteriorly. Posterior margin gently rounded in female, straighter in male (C. inflata Habitus 1, C. inflata Habitus 3). Left asymmetrical gland opens 11.5% of length posterior to tip of rostrum. Carapace very broad in ventral view, >50% of length in male (C. inflata Habitus 4), and >46% in female (C. inflata Habitus 2), in which the posterior region looks like "fat hips". Male, first antenna "e" seta armature of 10-13 pairs of spines (C. inflata 4).

Remarks
The exceptionally broad outline of the carapace in ventral aspect distinguishes this species from its other siblings in the rotundata group.

Distribution
In the North Atlantic, this species is abundant at 30°N and is progressively less common both polewards and equatorwards. It is rare in U.K. waters. Its overall bathymetric range is 200-1500m, but usually it is most abundant at 200-500m. 1, 2 (R.R.S. Discovery Map).
